Having worked in the South Yarra/Toorak area for little over 2 years now, I have surprisingly visited very few of the local cafes and restaurants. My Legendary Girlfriend opened earlier this year and was the destination for a coffee catch up with a friend. The cafe is located along the same strip of road as Botanical Gardens and Melbourne Grammar School. The exterior is startling white with fluoro-green letters but the interior is rather dimly lit. The front is bar-like with tall stools, high benches and lots of space whilst the back feels a little bit cramped.
The barista on the day may have slightly missed the mark with the presentation but the Allpress coffee with its bold flavour was pleasant enough for me to let it pass. The order of the day was a ‘croque monsieur’ for Y and a ‘house-made sweetened creamed corn served on sourdough’ for me. The poached egg was perfect, the chilli jam good and the creamed corn was alluring and addictive. Unfortunately, the bacon was overly crunchy in areas and the second sourdough piece had been toasted for too long, leaving it burnt, dry and quite unpleasant.
Croque Monsieur – gruyere cheese and ham off the bone, crowned with bechamel sauce and dijon mustard
house-made sweetened creamed corn served on sourdough with lashes of bacon and a poached egg, finished with our sweet chilli jam
Whilst there were some good aspects to MLG, there is obviously still room for improvement. They have the potential to make a real mark for themselves in the South-Eastern suburbs, but just need to be more consistent and refine a few of the ‘silly mistakes’.
